In 2022, as part of the strengthening strategy promoted by MAR+Invest, the Build & Connect (B&C) mentorship program emerged, integrating and enhancing the legacy of MAR Leadership. B&C was launched with the support of the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) and aims to expand its impact by incorporating new tools and strategic partnerships—particularly with the private sector—through an innovative approach focused on scaling market-based solutions that contribute to the resilience of the Mesoamerican Reef.
The 2025 cohort focused on public policy, with the purpose of strengthening the frameworks, capacities, and tools needed to address critical challenges facing the MAR, such as water pollution, overfishing, and coastal degradation. To this end, a strong portfolio of proposals was selected, supported by 15 decision-makers from the four countries: Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
This training process enabled structured progress from the identification of challenges to the development of concrete public policy proposals, strengthening the management and conservation of the MAR from decision-making spaces.
