Maritime Procurement Services (MPS), one of the companies in the MAR+Invest portfolio, is growing thanks to a loan facilitated by Viwala and Dreilinden.
Maritime Procurement Services is a Mexican company specialized in the management, disposal, and recycling of waste from the maritime industry (cruise and cargo ships), aiming to prevent ocean pollution, decarbonize the sector, and support the fight against the climate crisis. Thanks to the investment received through MAR+Invest, MPS will soon expand its operations to Cozumel, one of the biggest ports in the Caribbean and located near the #MesoamericanReef (MAR). In 2024 alone, the island received over 4 million tourists.
The initiative seeks to mitigate the environmental impact of tourism and help preserve this key region for MAR+Invest by collecting waste and transforming it into biofuels, an eco-friendlier alternative for industries such as Cemex.
Last year, MPS’s plant in Ensenada recycled 82% of the waste it received (over 415 tons! 💪), and now Cozumel represents the next big step.
With this expansion:
- MPS will increase its revenue by 30–40%
- Reduce production costs of alternative fuels by 20%
- Process up to 5 tons of cruise ship waste daily
- Hire 16 local workers
- Strengthen environmental education around the MAR.
Additionally, in partnership with Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL), a key MAR conservation ally, MPS will reactivate a biorefinery to convert used oil into biodiesel and is developing a CO₂ emissions reduction calculator—an essential tool for attracting future funding.
At Mesoamerican Reef Positive Invest (MAR+Invest), we supported MPS with financial advisory and strategic partnerships to mobilize capital alongside VIWALA and Dreilinden, a private investor interested in the company’s potential to generate positive social and environmental impact in the maritime sector, fully aligned with its transformative investment principles.
MAR+Invest is an initiative supported by the Global Fund for Coral Reefs and formed by Mesoamerican Reef Fund – MAR Fund , Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, Sureste Sostenible, A.C., Healthy Reefs for Healthy People, New Ventures, and VIWALA. It mobilizes private capital for businesses that generate a positive impact on the MAR and its coastal communities, aiming to scale innovative projects and design financial solutions that reduce investment risk and facilitate access to funding.
